You may not consciously think through every step because repetition has made the behaviour familiar.

Habits save mental effort because the brain learns patterns. Once a behaviour becomes familiar, we are more likely to repeat it when a similar situation occurs.

The good news? Habits can be changed and new ones can be built.

How Is a Habit Formed?

A useful way to understand habits is through three parts:

Cue → Routine → Reward

1. Coming home may become the cue, while checking the phone becomes the routine.

2. Reward

A reward is what makes the behaviour feel satisfying or useful.

After checking their phone, a student may feel entertained or relaxed. After completing a set of maths problems, they may feel a sense of achievement.

When a behaviour repeatedly follows a cue and produces a rewarding experience, the brain learns that pattern.

Why Do Some Habits Feel Difficult to Break?

Habits become stronger through repetition and familiar surroundings.

Suppose a student usually studies with their phone beside them. Every notification creates an opportunity to check it. Eventually, simply seeing or hearing the phone may trigger the urge to look at it.

This does not mean that students lack discipline. It shows how strongly our surroundings and repeated routines can influence behaviour.

Instead of relying only on willpower, students can change the environment around the habit.

Start Small

One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to change everything at once.

“I’ll wake up at 5 a.m., study for three hours, exercise, stop using my phone, read every day, and sleep early!”

That sounds impressive, but managing several major changes at once can be difficult.

A better approach is to start small.

Instead of deciding to study for two hours every day, begin with 20 focused minutes. Once that routine becomes comfortable, gradually increase it.

Small actions may seem insignificant at first, but consistent repetition can turn them into reliable routines.

Connect a New Habit to an Existing One

An easy way to build a new habit is to connect it with something you already do.

For example:

After brushing your teeth at night → pack your school bag.

After returning home → drink water and take a short break before starting homework.

After dinner → revise one topic for 15 minutes.

After waking up → make your bed before checking your phone.

The existing activity acts as a cue for the new behaviour.

This makes it easier to remember the habit because you do not have to create an entirely new routine from scratch.

Make Good Habits Easier

If you want to study more, make studying easier to begin.

Keep your books, notebooks, and stationery ready before your study session. You could maintain a simple habit tracker or make a weekly checklist.

Imagine your goal is to revise for 20 minutes every day. Seeing several completed days in a row can give you a sense of progress and encourage you to continue.

However, remember that missing one day does not erase your progress.

The goal is consistency, not perfection.

If you miss a day, simply restart the next day.

Replace Unhelpful Habits Instead of Just Removing Them

Sometimes, removing a habit completely is difficult because it serves a purpose.

Suppose you automatically use your phone whenever you feel bored while studying. Instead of simply telling yourself, “I won’t use my phone,” replace the behaviour with something else.

You could take a two-minute stretch break, drink water, write down a question, or walk around briefly.

The goal is to find a healthier response to the same situation.

Give Yourself Time

There is no magic number of days in which every habit becomes automatic.
